Description

The Northumberland Coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) – and for good reason. From its dramatic subtidal rocky reefs to mysterious sea caves and sweeping beaches, this area is packed full of spectacular marine life. And located a short distance from shore is one of the largest seal rookeries in Britain.

The Farne Islands are home to thousands of grey seals and each autumn hundreds of pups are born here. Diving or snorkelling in the temperate waters around this island guests will get a chance to get up close and personal with these creatures – the UK’s largest native carnivore.

Diving in groups no bigger than five you will get to spend a blissful couple of hours swimming amongst kelp fronds watching these animals in their natural setting. And if you’re lucky, you might even get a cheeky fin nibble!

Charlie Young - Saltwater Britain

Hosted by Charlie Young and the Fifth Point team, over the course of the weekend you’ll be taught about grey seals, their behaviour, habitat and ecology, along with some guidelines for responsible interaction.

Both days you’ll hit the water with our guides in small groups and complete two shores dives and two boat dives on the Farnes with the seals.

Your SWB guide

Joining you on this trip will be Charlie Young!

Charlie is a marine scientist, diver, expedition leader and wildlife presenter based in the UK. Passionate about inspiring people to care for the ocean, Charlie uses her skills as a scientist and communicator to champion change for our big blue.

Charlie founded #SaltwaterBritain as a campaign and micro-adventure series to raise awareness of UK marine wildlife and habitats. Together with Blue Ventures we’re bringing this movement to life via a series of immersive ocean expeditions that blend adventure with science to inspire a new wave of ocean advocates in the UK.

Conservation

Ocean adventures with impact

As well as all profits from your adventure supporting grassroots international marine conservation, your adventure will give you a brilliant insight into the issues facing our ocean at home and abroad.

The active conservation elements of this weekend will include learning about the importance of the Farne Islands in the context of UK seas, conducting an underwater Dive Against Debris litterpick and learning more about seals, from the threats they face and to what is being done to protect them.

We will also run a number of lectures and interactive workshops and discussions which will have UK focus with a global marine conservation overview.

Accommodation

To keep costs down, no accommodation is included for this trip, however, we’ll be staying at Alnwick Lodge which has camping, glamping and B&B options and is situated halfway between Seahouses and Blythe which are the two sites we will need to get to.

If you wish to look for somewhere else to stay we recommend looking at hotels and B&B options between these two areas.

FAQS

Your questions answered

Do I need to have a scuba certification?
Yes, you need to have a minimum of a PADI Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent), a minimum of 10 cold-water dives and have dived off a boat before.

Will there be dive guides?
The Fifth Point team and Charlie will lead dives so you will always be in a group with someone who knows the site. However, if you are an experienced diver and wish to dive alone with your buddy then this can be arranged too.

Do you provide all the equipment I’ll need?
No, but dive gear is available to rent from the Fifth Point team. However, if you have your own kit, then please bring it! See our ‘what to bring’ section for more details.

What is the minimum age to come on this trip?
16 years old with an adult, or 18 for individuals.

Do I need to have my own transport?
Yes – we need everyone who comes to have access to a car. We will be driving between sites and so need everyone to be able to get themselves around.

Are there shops or places to eat nearby?

At no point will we be anywhere that is cut-off from normal amenities and so you will be in close range of shops and supermarkets at all times.
